Picture a boy on a beach on a hot afternoon.

It’s time to leave. The family has packed..

For the boy, the game is to be first to the car. Off he goes through the sand, angling past bathers on blankets and chairs, heading straight to the gap in the dune grass where the cars are parked.

The others go with Grandpa along the shoreline where the sand is cool and firm. They come to the stream that trickles down from the dune at low tide. The parking lot is just beyond and from the top of the dune they stop and look for the the boy. He is wading towards them through hot deep sand. His mouth is set in an aggrieved pout.

Consider Grandpa’s thoughtful look . . .
