Shortcutting (2)

Consider Grandpa at age five.

A town boy visiting the old family farm

Watching his uncle at work in a field.

He needs to pee but is afraid of birds.

Go back to the house, says Uncle Don.

Use the gate and take the lane.

Instead, he heads across the field

To where only a low fence blocks the way…

A barbed wire fence where he is caught

and cries for his auntie.

Wets his pants.

A memory of this will return to him in geometry class.

Nature’s way . . .
